Inter-disciplinary.net is a multi-disciplinary project that seeks to explore the new and prominent place that the idea of culture has for the construction of meaning and identity, as well as the implications for social political membership in contemporary societies. In particular the project will assess the larger context of major world transformations, for example, new forms of migration and the massive movements of people across the globe, as well as the impact and contribution of globalisation on tensions, conflicts and the sense of rootedness and belonging. Looking to encourage innovative trans-disciplinary dialogues, papers have been invited from all disciplines, professions and vocations which struggle to understand what it means for people, the world over, to forge identities in rapidly changing national, social and cultural contexts.

~ Massive and new forms of global migration and the new hybridity of cultures
~ Assimilation, integration, adaptation and other forms of ‘forcing’ cultures on migrants

3. Individuals, Identity and the Inter-Subjective
~ De-centering individuals and th emaking of persons; thinking and acting with others in ind and interpersonality
~ Tensions, contradictions and conflicts of identity formation and social membership
~ New sources and forms of belonging; new tribalism, localism, parochialism and communitarianism
~ Bonds of care across boundaries of inequality and exclusion, ideologies and religions, politics and power, nations and geography
~ Who am I if not the Relation with Others?
~ Non-recognition as cultural violence

4. Cultural Formations
~ What are the dynamics and processes that define the central tenets of a culture?

ASEF invites contributions on the theme of Sustainable Creative Cities.

Ideas, comments, contacts are welcome to feed into a Culture360.org feature article on the role of the arts in the globalised urban context in Asia and Europe.

In October 2010, the 4th Connecting Civil Societies of Asia and Europe Conference takes place in Brussels as a preparatory event for the Summit meeting of Heads of State of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). This conference will include a workshop on the theme: Sustainable Creative Cities – the role of the arts in globalised urban context.

Invited experts will address the roles of artists and creative workers in the evolution of globalised cities across Asia and Europe, assessing how an “artistic mode of knowing” can contribute to a transition from creative cities to sustainable creative cities. The aim is to facilitate the emergence of local urban processes of social change in partnerships between artists, cultural practitioners and communities, as opposed to top-down urban planning. The workshop outcomes will include recommendations for the ASEM Summit and will be of relevance for local governance and for ASEM cultural policy.

As a contribution to the workshop, Culture360.org is preparing a feature article with short case studies to highlight examples of Sustainable Creative Cities in Asia and Europe. These will illustrate a range of themes, focal points and values and aim to widen reflection on the subject.

You are invited to contribute your ideas, comments and contacts on two questions:

1. How can the arts/artists contribute to a transition from creative cities to sustainable creative cities?

2. Can you suggest any specific initiatives that reflect good practice in creative sustainable cities? It might be a project, policy or city.

Please provide URL links with your answers and 2-3 examples/ideas per question are plenty!

In order to be considered for the article, please respond by: AUGUST 22 2010

Send your responses to: judith.staines [at] culture360.org

The article will be published on www.culture360.org, all contributions will be acknowledged and this topic will remain open for comments and debate for a longer period.

International Film Festival Rotterdam launches Cinema Reloaded - an ambitious experiment in film-making in the digital era. For a few euros, you can become a film co-producer: check out proposal by Ho Yuhang (Malaysia). Read More →

The International Film Festival Rotterdam launches an ambitious experiment in film-making in the digital era: Cinema Reloaded allows filmmakers to directly connect with film lovers in order to finance and distribute their projects through combined online crowd sourcing and crowd funding.

The participating directors are Alexis Dos Santos (UK/Argentina), Ho Yuhang (Malaysia) and Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland).

The first part of the Cinema Reloaded project is to seek finance for the three proposed films through the festival’s loyal supporters and film lovers around the world in a crowd-funding plan coordinated through the dedicated web site www.cinemareloaded.com.

The films will begin shooting when a minimum level of finance is reached. Payments will take the form of “coins” to be invested in an individual project. Once production has begun, backers, called “co-producers”, will be able to track their chosen project, talk to other investors and to interact with the film-maker. For the film-maker, this will be an opportunity to experiment with different ways to collaborate with audiences. The films will be premiered at the 2011 festival but will then be distributed online to various platforms.

Cinema Reloaded will be accompanied by a year-long discussion and debate on the issues raised by the experiment, at the festival itself and online at the main festival website. The film-makers will also blog on the progress of their projects.

“Cinema Reloaded is a bold, practical experiment that aims to test some of the opportunities of this rapidly changing time for film,” said Rotterdam director Rutger Wolfson, “This is not about finding the definitive business model but about trying to understand how the closer interaction between film-maker and audience, enabled by the internet, can benefit the whole of cinema.”

Visit cinemareloaded.com for more information, or to become a co-producer!
