Aichi Triennale 2022

The Aichi Triennale will be held in a number of cities across the Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from 30 July to 10 October 2022. 

The Aichi Triennale, this year with the theme STILL ALIVE inspired by the Aichi-born conceptual artist On Kawara, is an urban international art festival held every three years since 2010. The festival presents contemporary art, performing arts and other forms, across five programmes: Contemporary Art, Performing Arts, Learning, Collaborative Programmes and Online Initiatives. 

This year there will be exhibitions with 82 individual artists or groups from 32 countries. Works will be exhibited at locations including Aichi Arts Centre, which includes the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, as well as in the cities of Ichinomiya and Tokoname, and the Arimatsu district of Nagoya. 

The Performing Arts Programme features 11 artists/groups working across drama, music, and dance through the context of contemporary art and aims to create a cross-disciplinary programme that is open to experimentation. 

As part of this programme Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul engages in his first VR performance through an international collaboration with Japanese creators, with interactive lightwaves and sounds contributed by Japanese composer Sakamoto Ryuichi. Other highlights include Japanese composer Adachi Tomomi’s solo performance of sound poetry and Australian company Back to Back Theatre showing their films Oddlands and Shadow (performed with Japanese subtitles) with a post-performance discussion. 

For the Learning Programme seven artists/groups have been developing free-format research projects (fieldwork and workshops) since late 2021. There is also an online programme, in which on-site exhibitions and performances, video streaming and learning opportunities will be offered online.
