Indonesian Women Artists: Into the Future

Cemara Enam Foundation and Afterhours Books have recently published Indonesian Women Artists: Into The Future, a 320-page, limited-edition volume written by senior writer of contemporary art Carla Bianpoen. Indonesian Women Artists: Into The Future unveils the works by 21 Indonesian women artists between 28 and 41 years of age. Combining art, science, technology and the female spirit, they are considered a new and future direction in contemporary art of today and the coming era. The artists included in the book are Andrita Yuniza Orbandi; Ayu Arista Murti, Cecilia Patricia Untario, Dita Gambiro; Elia Nurvista; Erika Ernawan; Etza Meisyara; Fika Ria Santika; Irene Agrivina; Kinez Riza; Maharani Mancanagara; Maradita Sutantio; Natasha Tontey; Octora; Prilla Tania; Restu Ratnaningtyas; Sanchia Tryphosa Hamidjaja; Syagini Ratna Wulan; Tara Astari Kasenda; Theresia Agustia Sitompul, and Yaya Sung. An exhibition also entitled Into The Future, curated by Carla Bianpoen and Citra Smara Dewi and presenting work by these 21 artists, was held at the National Gallery of Indonesia earlier this 2019. In the book, each artist's profile includes images of their work, as well as an in-depth description of their practice and career, with personal insights. Overall a range of diverse techniques in the visual arts are covered, including installation and mixed media, linocut, textile, photography, glass, gauze, ceramic, watercolor, iron plate and tree branches. The selection of artists was carefully done by Carla Bianpoen, who had previously been involved in the Indonesian Pavilions at the Venice Biennales in 2013 and 2015. The first part of the collection also includes articles from notables in the field, from Toeti Heraty N. Roosseno, Hilmar Farid, Triawan Munaf, Inda Citramimda Noerhadi, Wulan Dirgantoro and Aprina Murwanti. Both initiatives are also related to the Cemara 6 Gallery-Museum, which since its foundation in 1993 has been committed to art and culture by devoting its attention, among others, to Indonesian women artists.
