Museum Storage: Launch of RE-ORG Crowdsourcing Project

The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) have recently launched a collaborative learning process focusing on the inventive storage solutions found by museums in different parts of the world. The initiative is part of the RE-ORG International programme, resulting from a joint ICCROM-UNESCO project, which aimed to provide a methodology to improve storage techniques in museums in developing countries. The new crowdsourcing project takes into account the different aspects which need to be borne in mind in museums' storage policies. A balance needs to be found between conservation, institutional and financial concerns, with storage solutions being adapted to the needs of the object while optimising space usage and costs. Yet it is often possible to repurpose or adapt already-existing equipment or materials, making sensible use of resources. In this context, museums which have developed suitable solutions are invited to send photos and short descriptions via e-mail to the RE-ORG Storage project, or on social media by using the hashtag #reorgtips. The deadline for participating is 31 January 2016. The results will be posted on a Tumblr blog and hosted on the ICCROM website.
