The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum is the first public contemporary art museum in Tokyo. It shows a major, systematic survey of contemporary Japanese art in an permanent collection. It is intended to be a site for international cultural and artistic exchange.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (the new Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) opened on March 18, 1995 with a major survey of contemporary Japanese art. The new museum is located in Kiba Park, in the east area of Tokyo.
The purpose of the newly built Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, is to collect, preserve, and exhibit works of art with a focus on contemporary work. It will give the citizens of Tokyo greater opportunities to see high-quality works of art and become more involved with art in a variety of ways, stimulating artistic activity and helping establish a firmer base for the growth of art and culture in Tokyo and entire county.
