Victorian Arts Centre

Arts Centre Melbourne aims to be a creative hub for the performing arts in Victoria. They do this through support for the directors, writers, musicians and actors that shape the future of performing arts in the State. The Theatre Buildings, under the Spire, showcase world-class theatre and performance while the an inspiring music program is showcased in the adjoining Hamer Hall and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in the surrounds of Kings Domain, close to the Botanic Gardens.

The Arts Centre has the largest collection of Australian art outside of the major art galleries as well as free and low-cost activities from educational programs to Summertime Grooves contemporary music series on the Lawn Stage.

Arts Centre Melbourne site has always been associated with arts and entertainment and has previously been home to circus, theatre, roller and ice skating, cinema and dance. After World War II it was decided that Melbourne needed a cultural centre. After many years of discussion, a master plan was approved in 1960, with Sir Roy Grounds as the chosen architect.

During the ensuing years, and to accommodate difficulties associated with the geology of the site, changes to the original plans were made and eventually Arts Centre Melbourne emerged as two buildings – now known as the Theatres Building and Hamer Hall.

Arts Centre Melbourne is a statutory authority of the Arts portfolio which is administered by Arts Victoria, a division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
