Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Australia

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences was established in 1879 and currently comprises the Powerhouse Museum, the Sydney Observatory and the Powerhouse Discovery Centre (collection stores at Castle Hill). Its genesis was part of the movement in many countries to establish museums of applied arts and sciences, designed to showcase the skills and techniques of an industrial society. 130 years later society has become increasingly complex and interconnected, however the Museum remains focused on using its collection and unique record of Australian life to provide a greater understanding of the world. Looking forward, the hybrid disciplines of arts and science are increasingly relevant as the Museum strives to make an impact on local and global communities. The programme of temporary exhibitions and activities complements a range of permanent galleries. Learning and creativity are a strong focus of the Museum. Exhibitions and programmes are based on the ideas and technologies that have changed our world, and the stories of the people who create and inspire them. The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences aims to be a leading museum of arts and sciences, loved locally and acclaimed internationally. Permanent Collections: The collection spans history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music, transport and space exploration. It is also home to the material heritage and stories of Australian culture, history and lifestyle, providing a comprehensive insight into this rich and diverse country. There is estimated to be well over 500,000 separate items in the Museum’s collection.
