Museum of the Republic of 1899, the Philippines

The First Philippine Republic, also known as the Malolos Republic, was a nascent government formed in Malolos, Bulacan. Its establishment in 1899 ended the Filipino revolution against Spain and gave merit to the Philippines as the first republic in Asia. The Museum of the Republic of 1899 (Museo ng Republika ng 1899) is housed at the convent of the Barasoain Church in Malolos. First built in 1859 out of nipa and bamboo, the church was razed and rebuilt twice. The edifice seen at present was built under the administration of Father Juan Giron, O.S.A in 1885, and was made in the typical Spanish colonial architectural design. The Museum presents the events of the revolution against Spain, the First Philippine Republic, and the war of the Filipino against the United States through innovative exhibits and artifact displays in its five galleries. The Museum of the Republic of 1899 is managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Permanent collections of the Museum of the Republic of 1899 include the following:

• The original carriage used by President Emilio Aguinaldo during the opening of the Malolos Congress
• Reproductions of stereographic cards of the Philippine-American War
