IDF 2024 Liquid Ranah, invites artists and audiences to immerse themselves in open-ended possibilities of fluid motion. With liquid forms, identities, memories, voices, gestures, actions and minds, we celebrate how contemporary dance is enriching our everyday interactions with places, communities and media.
Liquid Ranah combines the English word for Indonesian “cair”, and the Indonesian word for English “realms” and is in itself a movement between two languages, a dynamic field within the spectrum of linguistic realms. Liquid Ranah is not a physical location but a metaphorical site representing the transformative power of contemporary dance. This metaphorical framework indicates that the body, choreography, and stage are not solid in nature but fluid, constantly corresponding and negotiating with meaning, marked by history, and significant both psychologically and communally, thus conveying profound messages about our society and ourselves.

Liquid Ranah embodies notions of fluidity and diversity, and reshapes our own adaptability and resilience in an ever-changing world, including ways of choreographing our visions and bodies. As old binary frameworks to approach traditions, languages, cultures and genders are no longer sustainable, becoming liquid is a tactic forward and upward - socially, bodily and affectively.

- | "With the theme "Liquid Ranah" we mark the power present in the dance works of IDF 2024 in exploring the possibilities of fluid movement. A world where boundaries are no longer rigid in dividing and sorting, and a world where more and more gaps and bridges are created between overlapping categorizations. Thus, IDF becomes an inclusive space, a place where all expressions, identities, memories, thoughts, strategies, and bodies are celebrated. As liquid innately follows the shape of its vessel and seeps through within the cracks, absorbing and carving through boundaries, we hope that contemporary dance will continue to have the power to respond to the realities and challenges of life that may be difficult to express and discuss through other methods or spaces. Furthermore, we hope that dance can be part of the flow of life that continues to move." Message from Ratri Anindyajati, Director of IDF 2024 | - |
