Japan | Praemium Imperiale global arts prize winners 2023

Praemium Imperiale, a global arts prize that celebrates leading creatives in the fields of architecture, sculpture, music, painting and theatre or film, has announced the winners for 2023.

This year’s laureates come from Asia and Europe:

Painting: Giulio Paolini (Italy)
Sculpture: Ai Weiwei (China)
Architecture: Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA (Japan)
Music: Krystian Zimerman (Poland/Switzerland)
Theatre/Film: Wim Wenders (Germany)

The artists are recognised and awarded for their achievements, for the impact they have had internationally on the arts, and for their role in enriching the global community. Each laureate receives an honorarium of 15 million JPY from the organisers the Japan Art Association. A medal will be presented by Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association, in the Awards Ceremony held in Tokyo on 19 October 2022.

The Grant for Young Artists was awarded to Kronberg Academy Foundation (Germany), a major cultural organisation offering advanced training for gifted young musicians in the four disciplines of violin, viola, cello and piano. It will receive a grant of 5 million JPY to assist its efforts to help young artists at the press conference.

Praemium Imperiale is awarded annually by the Japan Art Association. Since its inauguration in 1989, it has become a mark of the arts.
