Iméra residency for artists and scientists 2025–2026

The Institute for Advanced Study at Aix-Marseille University (Iméra), in partnership with the Centre for Research, Artistic and Cultural Innovation (TEC/CRIAC Work and Culture), are calling for applications from artists and scientists for a two-part, 10-month research residency in Marseille, France, and Northern Europe, during the 2025–2026 academic year.

‘North/South: Work, Cultures, Utopias – TEC/CRIAC / Iméra Chair’ focuses on interdisciplinary research around ‘work utopias’, addressing the themes of agricultural and artistic labour in the contexts of Northern and Southern Europe. The proposed approach aims to encourage the emergence of innovative models, based on cooperation, interaction, and the recognition of the various stakeholders involved.

The ‘North/South: Work, Cultures, Utopias’ chair seeks to inspire innovative interdisciplinary artistic and scientific research on one or both of the following key themes:

  • Utopias of agricultural work between Northern and Southern Europe
  • Utopias of artistic work between Northern and Southern Europe

The first period of 5 months in Marseille (Iméra) is from 1 September 2025 to 30 January 2026. The second period of 5 months in Northern Europe (including Northern France) with TEC/CRIAC in Roubaix is from 9 February 2026 to 7 July 2026. During both residency periods, the chair holder will conduct research and fieldwork in collaboration with one or more groups of workers and other actors concerned by the project themes.

Eligibility

Applicants must not have resided in France for more than 12 months in the three years preceding the call for applications.

Support provided

While in Marseille successful applicants will receive:

  • a compensation amounting to 2,500 EUR per month
