Lithuania | Symposium 'Heaven' - open call for applications

Kintai Arts art residence in Lithuania invites applications from artists and art theorists/critics for an international symposium to be held 24 August - 15 September. Utopia, utopian thinking, utopian ideas inform the theme 'Heaven'.

Not so long ago we learned of the possibilities that utopian thinking can bring as well as the deeds it can inspire. It’s this almost atomic power we learned to be afraid of and hide from ourselves for a future without disappointment or regret. While applying critical thought with attempts to grasp the edges of intersecting realities, today we are using utopian perspectives in safe microdoses – just enough to keep us moving, believing in a reasonable, non-damaging manner, safe to others and ourselves. Should we identify these utopian expectations? Where do dreams end and realities begin?

Aiming to engage locally while simultaneously reflecting on global issues, the symposium will comprise of emerging, though experienced participants from Lithuanian and international backgrounds. 3 artists and 3 art theorists/critics will be invited to develop their projects at Kintai Arts artist residence from 24 August until 15 September. At the beginning of the symposium, 2 guest tutors (still to be announced) will be invited to aid in the concept development process. The results of the symposium are expected to be presented to the public in various forms chosen by the participants themselves  – exhibition, performance, presentations, texts, and discussions.

Utopia is an extremely wide subject, but necessary to ponder for any critical thought. That is the aim of this symposium. Artists and theorists/writers are invited to apply by attaching their portfolio and a short paragraph on the subjects of interest in the wide range of utopian ideas. The preference is given to candidates focusing on social, political, and/or cultural utopias in current societal or academic discourses.

The residencies and project development is funded.
Possibility for funding travel costs and grants will be specified and announced separately to all interested applicants.

Please send your applications to karolina.sadlauskaite@gmail.com until 15 May.
The participants will be informed until the 1st of June.
