[Amsterdam] Self-portrait of Raden Salleh

Indonesian artist Raden Salleh The Indonesian artist Raden Salleh (circa 1811 - 1880) is regarded as a pioneer of modern Indonesian painting. Descended from a noble Javanese family, Raden Saleh first learnt to paint from Belgian artist, A.J. Payen. In 1829, he had the opportunity to study painting and drawing in the Netherlands. He quickly became famous for his romantic landscapes and portraits. In 1851, Raden Saleh went back to the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), but before he departed he received the title of 'Painter of the king'.
The Tropenmuseum will exhibit its latest acquisition of the only known self-portrait painted by this famous artist.
This important acquisition was made possible through the legacy of  the late Mrs. J. In Tholenaar-van Raalte. This unique self-portrait  will be on display at the Tropenmuseum from 5 July to 18 August 2012 in the Gallery. Visitors will also discover more about the work and life of Raden Saleh.
