Asian Culture Co. | Kunsthalle Gwangju
The Asian Culture Co. exhibition and performance, is the result of a collaborative laboratory conducted within the first Asia Young Artists Festival in Gwangju, South Korea, where alternative art space MITE/Ugro selected and brought local artists together with Asian artists and curators. The exhibition is built around the Daein Market, a traditional Korean public market where numerous artist studios are based. The integration of art in Daein Market began in 2008, during the 7th Gwangju Biennale as part of the Bokdukbang Project, which had artists respond to the site to exhibit, hold events and organize workshops. Since then, Daein Market has grown into a prominent art hub, encompassing alternative spaces, artist studios and even generating the market’s own artists association. The Asian Culture Co. show features video interviews of selected vendors and artists from the market, to reflect the venue’s current community and provide visitors with information about the site's evolution from past to present. The exhibition also introduces the divergent practices of local and international artists, who were selected by MITE/Ugro to perform at the KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU, including Soichiro Mitsuya (Japan), Yangjah (Japan/South Korea), Black Jaguar and Johum Lee (South Korea).
