Australian Studies in China conference | Contested Histories and Politics of Memory

Contested Histories and the Politics of Memory is the 3rd Foundation for Australian Studies in China conference, and will be held in Shanghai 22-25 October. Attendance is free and registration is open. This international conference will bring together scholars and students from a range of disciplines - International Relations, History, Politics, Cultural Studies and Literature – to discuss history, commemoration, language, identity and memory in Australia and the Asia-Pacific. The conference will consider how societies remember, record and commemorate the past in order to explore contested histories, differing interpretations of the same event and the act of commemoration itself. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, which has long been a subject of extensive discussion, dramatisation, historical reflection and commemoration. As is apparent in the commemoration of Gallipoli, the past intrudes into all aspects of contemporary society: international disputes, Indigenous histories, the teaching curriculum, Asia literacy, gender relations and the nature and meaning of multiculturalism.
