Biennialization, Biennialization, Biennialization: The Bangkok Syndrome - symposium & call

None

Biennialization, Biennialization, Biennialization: The Bangkok Syndrome is a 2-day symposium, taking place in Bangkok, Thailand on August 11-12 as part of the Bangkok Biennial. An open call for papers and opinions to contribute ideas of what a biennial is, has been our could be invites abstracts by June 22.

The symposium is organized by Talk-Talk-Vilion (a pavilion of the Bangkok Biennial).  It will take place over 2 days hosted at The Jim Thompson House in Bangkok, Thailand on August the 11th and 12th.

The rise of biennial art exhibition, whether state-sanctioned or privately organized, has become an expected formula for garnering international attention to a contemporary art scene, though it often involves a myriad of other intentions and results, intended or not.

Biennialization, Biennialization, Biennialization: The Bangkok Syndrome focuses on current and historical trends in the increasingly ubiquitous biennial format. This symposium exists the context of Thailand, where three separate large-scale bi-annual exhibitions are to be inaugurated in this same year: the Bangkok Biennial, the Bangkok Art Biennale and the Thailand Biennale ( listed in order of appearance).

This unique situation invites discussion focusing on the nature and rationale of biennial-making in a wider, regional and international context; a local phenomenon colours perception beyond the local.
