British filmmaker awarded Stockholm Visionary Award
Stockholm Visionary Award 2013 has been awarded to the British filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Greenaway will be present in Stockholm to receive the Bronze Horse on November 8 and meet the audience during an exclusive Face2Face.Jury Statement: ”Whether men are drowning by numbers, bodies are turned into art or savage nature is transformed into haute cuisine, Peter Greenaway has always challenged the spectator like a true modern visionary. By questioning traditional notions of artistic expression and combining the latest techniques with his vast knowledge of the classic art forms, this year’s recipient of the Stockholm Visionary Award has indeed created a new cinematic language.”
Peter Greenaway has directed some sixty short and feature films, most of them characterized by a documentary style. With a background as a visual artist, his imagery consists of grandiose stage design, long takes, and an aesthetics taken from the Baroque and Renaissance paintings. His films revolve around obsession, death, guilt and sex. Peter Greenaway consolidated his position as a master of moving images with Draughtsman's Contract (1982), followed by a number of classics, such as Drowning by Numbers (1988), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989) and The Pillow Book (1996).
Peter Greenaway holds the position as Professor in Film Studies at The European Graduate School in Switzerland and has curated art exhibitions worldwide.
