Copenhagen | ‘Gathering’ seminar on independent art spaces and initiatives in Asia and Europe

Art Hub Copenhagen, in collaboration with independent curator Vanini Belarmino presents ‘Gathering’: A Global Seminar on Independent Art Spaces, from 4 to 5 April 2025 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This event will convene international artists, curators, and cultural practitioners to explore the evolving landscape of independent art spaces and initiatives.
The Gathering will foster critical dialogue among participants from Denmark, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, and Thailand on sustainability, resilience, and artistic agency amid shifting cultural and economic conditions. Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, performances, and studio visits, the seminar will serve as a platform for collective inquiry into the possibilities of independent artistic practice.
The event emerges from Belarmino’s research on independent art spaces in Southeast Asia, initiated in 2022 to explore how artist-run initiatives adapted to challenges such as funding constraints and community engagement. This exploration highlighted the resilience of these spaces and the urgent need for shared strategies and international collaborations. The Gathering serves as a crucial step in bringing together these stakeholders to exchange knowledge, develop new approaches, and strengthen cross-regional networks.
The seminar will also feature a special performance programme curated in partnership with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), showcasing artists Beum-Kyu Choi, Boma Park, Suhwa King, and Yehwan Song.
