International Cultural Relations of the European Union – Europe, World, Croatia - an international conference takes place in Rijeka, Croatia on 30-31 May, 2019. What is the role of cultural policies in fostering international cultural cooperation? Are cultural networks the expression of cultural change in international relations? How is the European Union using cultural diplomacy in strengthening external relations between the EU and third countries? What are the practices of the Republic of Croatia?

Next 30-31 May, the European Capital of Culture 2020 Rijeka together with the Centre for Democracy and Law Miko Tripalo, will organise an international conference on EU’s external cultural relations.

As one of the strands of the European Agenda for Culture adopted in 2007, and the new Agenda for Culture in 2018, culture has been a vital element in the European Union’s international relations. The Joint Communication Towards an EU Strategy for International Cultural Relations from 2016 sealed the EU’s strategy to put more culture in its external relations and external action.

The programme of the International conference will propose, among others, the following sessions:
