Expert Meeting: The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in the Management of Heritage Cities
Academics and civil society experts from Asia and Europe will gather in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from the 12th to the 14th of July 2012, to discuss the growing importance of public-private partnerships in the management of heritage cities and historic urban landscapes. The recommendations from this meeting, Managing Heritage Cities in Asia and Europe: The Role of Public-Private Partnerships, will be presented at the 5th ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting, whose theme is Managing Heritage Cities for a Sustainable Future. As the only permanent institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Asia-Europe Foundation has an important function in connecting reflections on the ASEM level with the concerns of civil societies in the two regions. Jointly organized by ASEF and the Centre for Heritage Conservation, Department of Architecture and Planning at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, the Expert Meeting will specifically consider good practices at the city, national and international levels in four sessions with the aim of improving our understanding of how collaborations have successfully addressed the management of heritage cities. In each case, the nature and results of the collaboration will be discussed in the light of the experience of various partners (public and private). The meeting strives to achieve two objectives, namely, formulating policy recommendations for ASEM Culture Ministers and compiling good practices on PPP arrangements in the management of heritage cities for both ASEM governments and the heritage sector in Asia and Europe. These good practices will be compiled in a publication to be presented at the upcoming 5th ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting (18-19 September 2012, Yogyakarta, Indonesia).
