Festival/Tokyo 2020 - in Tokyo and online
The international arts Festival/Tokyo is happening in 2020! It takes place from October 16 to November 15, as always in the Toshima area of Tokyo. Live performances are socially distanced and part of the festival is held remotely, with performances available to watch online.
This year's line-up features artists and companies from Japan, Europe and Asia, including Teater Ekamatra from Malaysia, fabien prioville dance company, Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting, and another collaboration between Japanese playwright Shu Matsui and up-and-coming South Korean director Kim Jeong.
Because of the coronavirus, this year's performances and events are taking place in very different (and difficult) circumstances. Certain productions were changed as a result of the pandemic due to the travel ban and so on. Live performances are socially distanced and part of the festival is held remotely, with performances available to watch online. Nonetheless, the opening work and other events continue the festival's efforts to develop a sense of local identity in Toshima communities.
You can see an overview of the festival program here - please check for the latest version as the programme was in flux and due to adaptation: https://www.festival-tokyo.jp/20/en/program.html
The program explores the theme of "Whither Imaginations?" and you can read more about this in the statement from our directors here: https://www.festival-tokyo.jp/20/en/about/directors-message.html
