Furoshiki Paris

In parallel to the Japonismes 2018 festival, in the framework of Tandem Paris-Tokyo 2018, this autumn Japan's capital offers Paris a fantastic present: a huge furoshiki gift wrapping cloth which will be installed on the forecourt of the Hôtel de Ville from the 1st - 6th November 2018.

A traditional wrapping technique with fabric, furoshiki represents tradition, art and Japanese know-how. It is used since the 6th century for different uses in daily life: transporting or packaging objects, give a gift, etc. While various environmental measures are being carried out globally, including the rejection of single-use and plastic products which are now measuring the disastrous environmental impact, furoshiki is considered the world's first eco-bag.

In addition, with workshops, held on the forecourt of the City Hall and at the House of Culture of Japan in Paris, you will become a true expert in the art of knotting furoshiki.

The furoshiki for Paris is an original architectural object, designed by one of the most promising architects of his generation: Tsuyoshi Tani. His projects and achievements are recognized and awarded as the Estonian National Museum or the Kofun Stadium, Olympic Stadium Project 2020 in Tokyo. It explores an architecture connected to the memory of places. For this project, it is in particular the statues of the famous men of the capital, on the facade of the Town Hall, which will be adorned with furoshiki .

Visitors will be able to enter inside a big pavilion where will be exposed different types of furoshiki as well as artistic installations.

The governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, invited about thirty personalities, French and Japanese, artists and others, to participate in this exhibition of original furoshiki on the theme of the cycle of nature. Included are: Anne Hidalgo, Shinzo Abe, Thomas Bach, Yoshiro Mori, Andrew Parsons, Agnes b., Jean-Michel Alberola, Nicolas Buffe, Jean Paul Gaultier, Constance Guisset, Morihiro Hosokawa, Jean Jullien, Shingo Katori, Kanako Kinutani, Takeshi Kitano, Rola's Setsuko Klossowska, Hiroko Koshino, Yayoi Kusama, Suzanne Lafont, Hakuo Matsumoto, Annette Messager, Rune Naito, Kohei Nawa, Mika Ninagawa, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Kashiwa Sato, Shishu, Hiraku Suzuki, Asao Tokolo, Philippe Weisbecker.
