In search of a local museology for Asia: call for papers

Museology Yogyakarta The Department of Archaeology of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, is organising a conference entitled "Museum of our Own: in search of a local museology for Asia", which will take place in Yogyakarta, on 18-20 November 2014. The event aims to reflect on the state of museums and museum education in Indonesia and Asia in general. Rather than a critical assessment of existing programmes, organisers aim to raise questions about how museological practices designed in the West could be rethought for Asian museums. Among the issues that will be addressed in successive sessions are "Writing Museum Histories in Southeast Asia", "The West and the Rest, the development of the theory of museology", "Museum and Heritage", "Conservation" and "Museology Education in Southeast Asia". Additional topics will be determined on the basis of the issues proposed under the conference's call for papers, which will remain open until 1 November. Abstracts of maximum 200 words should be submitted at this stage, with final papers submitted by 10 November. Registration for all participants closes on 27 October.
