International Museum Day 2018 is around the corner

The worldwide community of museums will celebrate International Museum Day on or around 18 May 2018. As previously indicated, this international event promoted by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) will this year focus on the theme 'Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics'.

The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” Organised on and around 18 May each year, the events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or a whole week.

Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2017, more than 36,000 museums participated in the event in some 157 countries.

What can you do?

  • If you work in a museum and have planned activities on the occasion of International Museum Day, you can promote them in the world map developed by ICOM
  • As a member of the public, view ICOM's world map or check museum listings and programmes in your own city or region to find out what's on in the coming days.
