Organised by Japan's National Museum of Ethnology, an ASEMUS member, an International Workshop on Migration and the Remaking of Ethnic / Micro-Regional Connectedness will take place in Osaka and Kyoto on 5-7 December 2014. On the basis of several case studies, the workshop aims to explore the similarities and uniquenes of the ways in which immigrants, refugees, migrants or minorities have fought against dominant cultures and the uniformity of globalisation to maintain a micro-regional community by remaking connectedness within a group. Examples to be presented in the course of the event include those of the Kazakh minority in Mongolia, the Chinese Muslim in Northern Thailand, the Palaung Buddhists in Northern Myanmar, etc. The workshop is supported by the Japan Society of the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Kyoto University's research project on 'Migration and Religious Practices: Comparative Study on the Dynamism of Local Society' and sponsored by the National Museum of Ethnology Director-General's Leadership Programme.
