New UNESCO Report on the Implementation of the 2015 Recommendation on Museums
UNESCO has recently published the Report on the Implementation of the UNESCO 2015 Recommendation on Museums and Collections, which is freely available online. The document examines progress made since the adoption of the 2015 Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections and their Role in Society (often referred to as 'the 2015 Recommendation').
Drawing on 56 national reports and an expert meeting held in January 2019, the consolidated report examines existing legislation and statistics in the field of museums and the way in which Member States implement policies and measures to strengthen the primary functions of museums. Furthermore, it presents emerging challenges faced by Member States in guiding museums to fulfil their missions as well as examples of good practices at the national level in the museum sector.
The report was coordinated by François Maresse (Professor of Cultural Economics and Museology, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3) and involved scientific contributions from a number of regional experts, including Amareswar Galla, Chief Curator of Amaravathi Heritage Town, India, and Executive Director and Founder of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum.
The report is available in English and French at https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000371549
