On the Move Cultural Mobility Forum and Cultural Mobility Yearbook 2024

From 25 to 26 April 2024 On the Move organises the third Cultural Mobility Forum, hosted by Wales Arts International in Caernarfon, Wales and live streamed by HowlRound.

As part of its multiannual programme co-funded by the European Union, each year On the Move proposes a Cultural Mobility Forum to collectively investigate international artistic and cultural mobility trends. As a unique knowledge platform, the network works together with its members and partners to design thematic panel discussions and contextualise global mobility issues addressed in On the Move’s annual Cultural Mobility Yearbook.

Focus 2024: Cultural mobility beyond internationalisation

The 2024 Cultural Mobility Forum aims to imagine new horizons for professional development programmes with an international dimension.

These professional development programmes include a set of activities such as individual or collective training courses, masterclasses, coaching and mentoring sessions, or creative apprenticeship opportunities that enable artists and culture professionals to enhance their practice and invest in skills that will help them build a sustainable professional pathway.

Cultural Mobility Yearbook 2024

The Cultural Mobility Forum is connected to data analysis and the articles included in the Cultural Mobility Yearbook 2024.

On the Move regularly commissions researchers to investigate different themes closely related to the network’s activities and the work carried out by its members. Reflecting on transversal concerns and key areas of artistic and cultural mobility, the network tries to establish a clearer picture of current movements and trends while formulating policy recommendations.

With training and professional development as its framework, this publication looks back on activity in 2023 in order to get a picture of where the international cultural mobility sector stands today, and a sense of where it might be heading next. In the second section of the Yearbook, two writers give a personal perspective on the subject of training and professional development. In a first article, Birgitta Persson reflects on the changing face of international collaboration, sketching five key challenges for the field to consider, ranging from the importance of local learning and cross-collaboration to the impact of AI and new technology as it reformulates the ‘live’. In the second, Vânia Rodrigues questions internationalisation in light of the green transition, highlighting a need for ‘unlearning ways of doing which are tied to colonialist and mercantilist legacies’.
