Batak Sculpture From Northern Sumatra

The exhibition "Beginning of the Becoming: Batak Sculpture from Northern Sumatra" examines the extraordinary sculptures of the Batak peoples of northern Sumatra in Indonesia. It will be held at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore until June 1st 2014.

The Batak live in the mountain heartlands centred around the majestic shores of Lake Toba, a striking environment that nurtured an intriguing culture rooted in ancient Southeast Asian traditions. The exhibition challenges preconceptions about what constitutes art in Batak culture, and asserts a rightful place for Batak sculpture in the global artistic canon. Over 80 works in wood, stone, and bronze on loan will be shown, 20 of which have been donated to the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Admission is free.
