Singapore | Beneath the Moon co-production

Beneath the Moon / Sous la Lune is a Co-production of Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, with an ongoing exhibition (till Feb 3) and performances taking place on January 20, 2016 at Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, Gallery 1, LASALLE College of the Arts. Artists: Aung Ko, Hicham Berrada, Ade Darmawan, Marguerite Humeau, Dusadee Huntrakul, Emmanuelle Lainé, Lou Lim, Oanh Phi Phi, Vivien Roubaud, Yee I-Lann and Raphaël Zarka Sous la lune/Beneath the moon presents major existing and new works by eleven artists from Southeast Asia and France. Curated by Khairuddin Hori, Deputy Director of Artistic Programming at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), the exhibition explores the mysterious, complex and multi-layered nature of aesthetic experience through immersive artworks and installations in a range of media. The exhibition is conceived as an encounter between art and artists from opposite sides of the world, whose practices may be recognized in their native countries but remain unknown elsewhere. Rather than represent the artists’ countries of origin—an approach often used by art institutions in cross-cultural exhibitions—Sous la lune/Beneath the moon instead highlights the personal creative process of each artist, and the diversity of artistic practice across France and Southeast Asia. The exhibition also reflects the experimental approach and all-encompassing character of exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo, and its commitment to researching and supporting emerging artists and art scenes from around the world. An evening of performances by artists in the exhibition will take place during Art Stage Singapore and Singapore Art Week 2016.

Performing the Moon Performance and exhibition during Art Stage Singapore 2016: 20 January 2016 In the context of the exhibition Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon, the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore and Palais de Tokyo (Paris) present Performing the Moon, a special evening of live art events by Paris-based artists Hicham Berrada, Marie-Luce Nadal, and Raphaël Zarka. Spread across outdoor locations at LASALLE College of the Arts, the events activate processes and ideas from artworks in Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon. Programme Hicham Berrada, Présage (Premonition) 7:45–8:30pm Chemical experiments performed by Hicham Berrada are filmed and projected live on a 4-metre wide screen. Resembling transforming clouds and organic shapes, the projections are accompanied by sound from invited sound artist Mark Wong. The performance draws on Berrada’s ongoing research into chemical processes and biological conditions. Marie-Luce Nadal, Cultiver la Brume (Growing Mist) 8:30–9:30pm Marie-Luce Nadal creates the illusion of mist in this new performance. The work references her research into systems that control and manipulate natural environments. Nadal’s previous projects include Fabrique de Nuages (Cloud Factory), a system that reproduces clouds, and the Fair Weather Foundation, a not-for-profit enterprise that sells rights to air in anticyclones. Performing the Moon is part of Singapore Art Week (January 16–24, 2016). Along with the exhibitionSous la Lune/Beneath the Moon, the event is co-produced by the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris). The exhibition and event are presented under the aegis of the Emerging Talents from Emerging Countries programme initiated by the Total Corporate Foundation and Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
