Tokyo | Asia in Resonance 2019

Asia in Resonance 2019 is a celebration of cultural exchange between Japan and Southeast Asia, presented by the Japan Foundation Asia Center at venues in Tokyo during late June and July 2019. Alongside cross-border productions of stage performances and films, a symposium on transnational collaboration in performing arts takes place in Tokyo on 4 July.

As well as being an opportunity to look back at the achievements of mutual cultural exchange which the Asia Center has been holding over the last five years, this festival will provide a springboard to further deepen ties between Japan and Southeast Asia.

As part of Asia in Resonance 2019, a symposium on July 4th on Transnational Collaboration in Performing Arts - Sharing the Unseen Process and Archiving what will disappear / Asia in Resonance 2019 with speakers from Asia and Europe.

In the creative process of making theatre, dance and other performing arts, especially when it is a transnational project in which people from different cultural backgrounds are involved, there lies many valuable experiences, realisations and knowledge. Is it possible to share them with others who were not there in that process? And, if performing arts, which can only be seen here and now, leave something behind as record or archive, what is its meaning and what do we get from such endeavour?
This symposium will introduce a number of cases and discuss the issue from various perspectives, continuing on to further debates in the future.

Gala concert, with a multinational orchestra comprising musicians from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar.
Fever Room, projection performance by internationally renowned Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Dance Dance Asia: a collaborative street dance project between Southeast Asia and Japan.
