Ulaanbaatar Biennale 2025

The Ulaanbaatar Biennale, initiated by the City Mayor in cooperation with the Arts and Culture Department of the City Implementing Agency and the Arts Council of Mongolia (ACM) NGO, will be held from 6 to 20 June 2025 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Sydney-based curator Tian Zhang has been invited by the City Mayor to be the Chief Curator of Ulaanbaatar Biennale 2025, a new biennial arts event for Mongolia’s capital, and the title is ‘On the horizon, under the moon / Сарны дор тэнгэрийн хаяанд’.

In 2025 the Ulaanbaatar Biennale will focus on promoting and disseminating media and visual arts, one of these seven fields and will aim to meet the spiritual, aesthetic, historical, and artistic needs of the city’s residents, contribute to the development of cultural tourism.

The Ulaanbaatar Biennale will feature artworks by Mongolian and international artists organised around the curatorial concept. International artists will be curated whereas Mongolian artists are invited to submit proposals to an open call. Artworks will be exhibited at the Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Chinggis Khan Museum, Red Ger Gallery and other galleries and museums.

Ulaanbaatar city joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023 and it is now one of 355 cities across more than 90 countries joined this network. This network provides a significant opportunity to promote Mongolian art and culture globally, while also enhancing the prominence of culture and the arts in the city. 

The main programmer of the Ulaanbaatar Biennale is the Arts Council of Mongolia (NGO), with co-organisers of the Culture and Arts Authority, implementing Agency of Government of Mongolia, Blue Sun Contemporary Art Center, Marketainment Mongolia LLC. Sydney-based curator Tian Zhang has been invited to be the Chief Curator of the biennale.
