None Chinese writer and broadcaster Xinran chooses five books on Chinese history and culture she recommends you read if you want to understand China better.

Xinran is a Chinese writer, broadcaster, born in Beijing and now living in London.  Author of many acclaimed books, Xinran has founded The Mother’s Bridge of Love, an organisation helping disadvantaged Chinese children and aiming to build a bridge of understanding between the West and China. She chooses five books on Chinese history and culture and says the birth of a donkey is more likely to be celebrated in rural China than that of a baby girl.
