Aalto University School of Art and Design

The Aalto University School of Art and Design has been a leader in art and design education for over 138 years. It is an international postgraduate university institution with students from over 50 countries. It offers doctorate, master and bachelor degrees in a wide range of disciplines - fine art, design, new media, art education, visual culture, motion picture and production design.

School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design
Students at the Department of Film and Television start by receiving an introduction to the major studies of each area of specialisation in their first year. Specialisation according to each area of specialisation takes place initially through the first year’s scene exercises and then, from the second year onwards, through fiction and documentary film projects.

In the BA programme, studies are organised around courses, but focus strongly on producing film projects and building a knowledge base for the more advanced studies of the MA. Each student is guaranteed to have senior artistic direction or production responsibility within their own fields, in the production of two fiction and/or documentary short films in their three first years of study.

The advanced studies of the MA strengthen the students’ artistic and professional skills and help them to find a research-oriented approach to their specialist fields. In addition to taking seminars and specialist courses, MA students can improve their professional skills by participating in film and TV productions external to the School. The MA diploma work comprises artistic and theoretical parts whose implementation varies depending on the area of specialisation.
