Art in Context: Learning from the Field - conversations on participatory art in Asia
Art in Context: Learning from the Field - a new publication from the Goethe Institut Malaysia features conversations with and between art and cultural practitioners. It introduces 21 passionate statements from practitioners in the field of participatory art from Myanmar, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong and China.
Their contributions help to define a complex practice, that takes many forms and is called by many names, but is united by a spirit of giving, receiving and reciprocating in art-making.
Mirroring the essence of the exchange within this practice, the structure of this publication is based on dialogue. The idea of peer-to-peer conversations was kindled during our initial encounters in the field, the understanding we gained about each other’s practices and the desire to eventually learn more from each other.
The diversity and messiness of the fieldwork is part of the field, and here, that experience is expressed in the original voices of the practitioners.
The contributions of the following participating artists, curators and thinkers: Rika Aki, Ko Aung and Haymann Oo/Zero Art Space, Herman Bashiron Mendolicchio, Jakob & Manila Bartnik, Tey Beng Tze/Findars, Susanne Bosch, Lee Cheah Ni, Lee Chun Fung, Bhumin Dhanaketpisarn, Djuwadi, Misako Ichimura, Okui Lala, Renan Laruan, Alex Lee, Yeoh Lian Heng/Lostgens, Zulu Kageyama and Kuri Suzuki/ Art Lab Ova, Alecia Neo, Emma Ota, Zikri Rahman, Rolf Stehle, Jennifer Teo & Tien Wei Woon/Post-Museum, Caique Tizzi, Elaine W.
