Backstage: Managing creativity and the arts in South-East Asia

Backstage: Managing creativity and the arts in South-East Asia was published by UNESCO Bangkok in 2021 and is available in seven regional languages, as well as English.

The publication draws on the findings of UNESCO's study of the creative sector in nine countries of Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Viet Nam). 

Content includes 29 case studies from the region, interviews and nine country briefs, plus background info on the policy and operational context for CCIs in SE Asia. The case studies cover areas such as Education, Advocacy & Human Rights, Creative Experiments and Heritage.

The research was was led by Sunitha Janamohanan of LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore in collaboration with Audrey Wong Wai Yen and Natasha Lau. National researchers contributed from each SEA country. Design and editorial support by Sali Sasaki.

Financial support for the publication was provided by the Korean government.

The publication is a free download from the UNESDOC Digital Library (search for Backstage). It is published in English, Khmer, Bahasa Indonesia, Vietnamese, Thai, Lao, Malaysian and Burmese.
