Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute

The Cyprus Centre of the I.T.I. was established in November 1977 and it acts as an interface between the local and the global theatre communities, communicates international trends and supports two-way artist exchange.

The centre is part of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) which is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in Prague in 1948 by UNESCO and the international theatre community. A worldwide network, ITI aims to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts (drama, dance, music and theatre) in order to consolidate peace and solidarity between peoples, to deepen mutual understanding and increase creative co-operation between all people in the theatre arts.

In the ’90’s the Centre began a series of activities relating to ancient Greek drama. They have continued successfully to this day and have become significant cultural events of international appeal that have over the years achieved the establishment of a dialogue with intercultural dimensions. Through these activities ancient Greek drama is viewed from two perspectives: as a field of academic study and research and as a stage performance.
