Vietnam Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism

In 2007 the former National Sports Committee, the National Administration of Tourism and the Committee for Population, Family and Children were merged with the cultural departments of the former Ministry of Culture and Information to become the new Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. At the same time the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the press and publishing departments of the former Ministry of Culture and Information were merged to become a new Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam is the government organisation responsible for state management in the fields of culture, family, sports and tourism, and for the state management of public services in the fields of culture, family, sports and tourism, based on the provisions of Vietnamese law.

The Basic Culture Department of the Ministry is responsible on behalf of the Ministry for guiding the development of basic culture throughout the country. Specifically, the Department seeks to improve cultural standards at community level throughout the country by means of activities in the fields of mass culture, propaganda and advertising, ‘families of culture’ (gia đình văn hóa) and ‘villages of culture’ (làng văn hóa) schemes, ‘emulation drives’ (thi đua), preservation and promotion of local traditions and the organisation of traditional festivals.

It provides guidance to and oversees the activities of provincial and municipal cultural centres throughout the country and co-ordinates the design and nationwide distribution of government propaganda posters.
