German Embassy supports Culture House in Luang Prabang
The German Embassy in Vientiane is providing funding for the renovation of the Mansion of Queen Khamfanh in Luang Prabang. The project has been initiated by GLAD – German Lao Association for Development, which plans to organise cultural events and German-Lao encounters at the Queen Khamfanh Mansion.
The decayed conditions of the historical building made the 201 million kip donation necessary to restore the main construction and to repair the roof. Furthermore the house, which was built around 1800 AD by King Bualaphanh and constitutes an important part of the UNESCO world heritage protected area of Luang Prabang.
It was used as an art school from 2003 to 2013 and now houses the Children`s Cultural Center. The Centre provides after-school activities for more than 400 children where the children of Luang Prabang and nearby villages can learn traditional Lao instruments, traditional Lao dances and first language skills.
The partly renovated building opened at the end of November 2014. The roof repairs and conservation work are in progress.
