ARCUS artist-in-residence project 2011 IBARAKI
Applications are invited from individual emerging visual artists for a residency in Japan at ARCUS Project in Ibaraki. Residencies run September - December 2011.The artist-in-residence program of ARCUS Project which aims to support the artistic activities of emerging artists was launched in 1995 by Ibaraki Prefectural Government. In its 16 years history, ARCUS has invited 77 artists from 25 countries / regions, and supported their artistic projects and researches during the residence. A number of previous residency artists are now known as cutting- edge artists in international art scene.
Since 2010, ARCUS artist-in-residence program has focused more on the “process” of activities. Therefore, we are looking for a project which does not regard final presentation as a goal, but tries to conduct a site-specific research / project within a certain period of time. It is also expected that the research / project is open to the local community for sharing the process and collaboration. In addition to those tendency (intention), ARCUS also expect for a landscape art project which regards “Moriya Manabi no Sato” building, where our studio is located, and its circumstance as the theme or materials (See images and ground plans).
The proposed projects should be temporary works with which the applied area can be returned to its original state. Since the program is aimed at promoting international exchanges, applicants should possess nationality of a country other than Japan. Not more than one artist will be selected from any one country / region.
In previous years, three resident artists have been chosen - you can read about them here.
Notice from ARCUS following the March 11 earthquake:
We extend our condolences and prayers to all the people in Japan.
In addition we really appreciate messages from oversea artists and art lovers. They are inspiring and make us happy. We try continuing Artist-in-residence program with our all efforts.
