Hungary | Artist residency connecting art and science
BALATORIUM calls for artists and artistic duos working in any artistic field or medium for their 2022 art residency programme in the Balaton region in Hungary.
The aim of the residency programme is to promote dialogue between art and science by bringing in artists who create new works of art in collaboration with researchers, experts and ecologists active in the Balaton region, based on site- and context-specific research.
BALATORIUM is an ecological and cultural programme series and a science-communication project within the framework of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 – European Capital of Culture. The aim of the project is to support cultural, artistic and educational productions reflecting on the most important ecological challenges of Lake Balaton and its region, along with promoting a broader discourse on the topic.
The residency
The first edition of the residency programme is scheduled for the first half of October 2022, with the Balaton Limnological Research Institute as both the professional partner and venue provider. The second edition of the residency programme will take place in the Balaton Uplands National Park in the European spring of 2023.
The new artworks/productions based on the research carried out in the framework of the residency programme will be presented during the BALATORIUM Ecological Week in August 2023.
The programme provides:
- Accommodation (14 nights)
- Travel expenses (within Europe)
- Material costs (maximum 300,000 HUF per project)
- Artist fee (150,000 HUF for individual creators, 200,000 HUF for duos)
- Consultation and mentoring
- Curatorial and production assistance
- Presentation of the completed artworks at the Ecology Week 2023
- Documentation and promotion of the project
Studio space is not available on site.

PAD Foundation is a co-production partner and the professional partners of the residency programme are the Balaton Limnological Research Institute and the Balaton-felvidék National Park Directorate.
