Indonesia | Association of Southeast Asian Studies Annual Conference 2023

The Association of Southeast Asian Studies (ASEAS) is calling for papers for the 32nd conference, to be held at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, and online from 27 to 30 November 2023.

Proposals are welcomed on any subject in Southeast Asian Studies. They hope to attract a range of papers across eras, geographies and disciplines. As an international and multi-disciplinary scholarly organisation, ASEAS particularly welcomes submissions from Southeast Asia-based scholars and proposals that would develop cross-disciplinary collaboration. Multimodal presentations suitable for the online environment are also welcome, and they also invite proposals for screenings of documentaries or fiction films from Southeast Asia

Beyond research, they are interested in receiving session proposals that address Southeast Asian Studies pedagogy, “impact” and “knowledge exchange,” and the shape and future of the discipline. Along these lines, they welcome panels that include activists, teachers, artists, and other community practitioners alongside, and in dialogue with, academic colleagues.

The 2023 conference will be a hybrid event, with online panels taking place on 27 November and in-person events on 28–30 November.

Submission guidelines

ASEAS invites the submission of fully formed panel proposals or roundtable discussions, as well as individual paper proposals which will be will be grouped together by subject, theme or discipline. Panels should consist of a convener and 3–4 presenters and will be a maximum of 2 hours.

ASEAS also welcomes creative and experimental session formats that reconfigure the traditional 3-paper panel and encourage audience interaction, including (but not limited to): flash papers, keyword/image sessions, work-in-progress discussion of pre-circulated papers, reading groups, and workshops.
