3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo calls for artists for short-term summer residencies July/August 2011. In a time of difficulty what makes art matter?

Japan has suffered a great deal from the devastating earthquake and tsunami and we are all led to question what is important to us at this time. And as we consider such things we can only come to an even stronger conclusion as to the significance of art. It is a time to prove this significance.

3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo, is calling for artists who wish to undertake this challenge and present their own reading of the power of art. In a time of difficulty what makes art matter? What role can art play in our lives? What meaning can it hold for us? Artists are invited to face these questions and pursue personal answers at a time when such matters can not be ignored.

3331 is able to provide accommodation and studio facilities for artists, as well as an opportunity to give a presentation with regard their work to a select audience/general public, along with thorough support being offered towards the artists' projects.

If you are interested to join this program please contact Emma Ota at info [at] en.3331.jp +81 3-6803-2441 as soon as possible. The residence is available for 1 month between 8th July-5th August.

3331 Arts Chiyoda is dedicated to creating a space where people of all backgrounds and interests are able to come together in a creative environment, and as part of this mission 3331 offers a unique residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. This includes not only the visual arts but also practitioners in design, architecture, dance and music etc. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo. Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo's art scene through the hub that is 3331.

With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one's doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone's throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base. Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda.
