Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral - 2019 residential fellowships call

None

Applications are invited from international visual artists and curators for the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral 2019 fellowships at Bad Ems in Germany.

For 2019 the following fellowships are offered:

 For international visual artists

Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic genre or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to enable deeper mutual creative cross-fertilisation among the resident artists.

Visual Arts, fashion and jewellery have been enriching each other for centuries. Now, in the still-young millennium, and building on trends from the 20th Century, this tradition of structural rapprochement and discursive interaction is seeking new ways of expression. Not only questions of common features and analogies in design and structure are at the centre of focus today, but especially also questions about the potential in terms of content, which is often visionary and anticipatory, of the triad of Visual Arts – Fashion – Jewellery.

The democratisation and popularisation of fashion and jewellery have made not only the boundaries between commerce and artistic practice more fluid, but also those between the social systems in which they are embedded.

This is the context in which we are offering 2019 Residential Fellowships with a focus on the theme of:

»Luxury and Glamour? Artistic Perspectives in Fashion and Jewellery«

An examination of the crossover of Visual Arts with fashion and jewellery should be the primary concern. Together with the Fellows we would like to explore the aesthetic, material, performative, social and cultural implications, and so the potential, of fashion and jewellery as social identifier. This is not just about the utility function of fashion and jewellery; the focus is on the one hand on the formal and conceptual exploration of media opportunities and boundaries, and on the other hand on interaction with relevant questions in the interplay between luxury, glamour, globalisation, transculturality and sustainability.

Fellows will have the benefit of competent partners for expert discussion, experimental work or just swapping experiences from our collaboration with the Faculty of Design of the Trier University of Applied Sciences and its study areas of Gemstones and Jewellery in Idar-Oberstein and Fashion Design in Trier.

For international fellows in the humanities

The residential fellowships are endowed with 1,400 Euro a month.

Deadline for applications: 30 June 2018

The application period for all fellowships runs up to and including June 30th 2018 (date of postmark). Detailed information and application forms are available on our homepage.
