Malaysia | SEA Choreolab 2025

MyDance Alliance and Rimbun Dahan are calling for applications from emerging contemporary dance choreographers from Southeast Asia to attend a facilitated international choreographic laboratory at Rimbun Dahan, Selangor, Malaysia, from 4 to 13 July 2025.

A total of 14 chosen choreographers will live, work and explore together, with guidance from facilitator, Malaysian choreographer and artistic director Prof. Joseph Gonzales.

The programme will consist of 7 work days with 2 days of excursions to arts spaces or recreational spaces in Kuala Lumpur. Work days in the Dance Studio at Rimbun Dahan will consist of sessions exploring choreographic methods, analysis and movement techniques led by Prof. Gonzales and by the participants themselves.

Other activities include live performance viewing, informal socialising and discussions, and networking events. The programme may include a studio showing to share the creative process and artistic development from the Choreolab with the Malaysian dance community and the wider public.

Eligibility

  • Emerging contemporary dance choreographers, aged 35 or under, or who began creating contemporary work within the last five years. Artists who create performance art or physical theatre works are also eligible.
  • You should have established a professional or semi-professional practice, and have created at least 3 short works or 1 full length work.
  • Citizen of AND resident in an ASEAN country (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Viet Nam) or Papua New Guinea or East Timor.
  • Able to communicate functionally in English.
  • Excited to increase your knowledge base, share your practice and establish networks with your international peers.

Support

  • Twin share accommodation at Rimbun Dahan
  • Entry to all Choreolab activities
  • 3 meals per day during the project 
  • Transfer to/from Kuala Lumpur airport or bus terminal (subject to conditions).
