Syros island | Sounding Paths 2018 | site-specific sound art residency call
For the Sounding Paths 2018 residency, the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens in partnership with Syros Institute & Syros Sound Meetings, associate partners of the INTERFACES network, invite musicians, sound artists & improvisers with an interest in experimentation & site-specific composition, improvisation or performance, for a joint 10-day residency on the island of Syros, 2-12 July 2018.
The residency program, now in its seventh consecutive year, has hosted participants from Greece, Cyprus, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Finland, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia and Japan and led to the development of original site-inspired works and performances by a diverse range of international artists, including Graham Lambkin, Áine O’Dwyer, Michael Pisaro, Deborah Stratman, Viv Corringham, Mike Cooper, Andrew Raffo Dewar and Sabu Toyozumi.
Applications are especially encouraged from student, graduate and professional artists working at the intersections between visual, sonic and/or textual media, as well as practice-based researchers interested in aural histories and sensory ethnographies.
Indicative areas of interest for proposed projects include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Ethnographies of the senses
- Aural histories
- Documenting and translating sound
- ‘Noisy’ media, interference and obsolete sound / image technologies
- Politics of noise and silence
- Poetics of listening
- Materiality and metaphysics of sound
Application & Participation
Staying at the converted guesthouse of a 17th-century Jesuit Monastery on the historic Ano Syros hillside, resident participants will work individually and/or together over a period of 10 days, towards the development of original sound & intermedia projects situated in or inspired by Ano Syros and nearby sites on the island. At the end of the 10-day period, all participants are invited to present one or more of their individual and/or collaborative projects in an informal public showcase organized by Syros Sound Meetings.
Participation and accommodation are free of charge, and the residency also covers Athens-Syros return ferry tickets on July 2 and 12. Beyond that, you will be expected to meet your own daily maintenance / food costs, as well as travel costs to and from Greece. The organisers are happy to provide invitation or reference letters where necessary, to assist with grant applications towards travel & subsistence cost coverage.
