Trasatlántica PHotoEspaña 2017 in Manila | portfolio review and workshop call

PHototoEspaña and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development - AECID organizes Trasatlántica PHotoEspaña 2017 in Manila, Philippines, on the 17th and 20th of July. Portfolio review opportunity open to Filipino photographers and professional workshop application open.

This program gives photographers the chance to show their portfolio to international experts in one-to-one appointments of 20 minutes. There will be an open call to select the participants. During these reviews, photographers receive suggestions, constructive feedback about their work and advice on possible career opportunities.

If you are a Filipino, you can submit your work until June 20th.

- Send 15 photos maximum, series description and your biography to: trasatlantica@phe.es

- 20 participants will be selected for the portfolio review.

- Travel expenses will be covered by the participants.

Portfolio review

The portfolio review will be held at Pioneer Studios ( 123 Pioneer St, Mandaluyong. 1550 Metro Manila, Philippines)

Exhibition

An independent curator will make a collective exhibition of selected works that will be shown at the Official Section of PHotoEspaña 2018.

Award

A selected jury of professionals will choose the winner of the Discoveries Week PHE Award out of all the photographers that have attended the portfolio reviews held in Madrid, Morocco, Sao Paulo and Manila this year.

Eva Mcgovern

Independent Curator, Manila

Eva McGovern-Basa is a British-Malaysian independent curator and writer based in Manila, Philippines. She has worked across museums, galleries and auction houses for the past 15 years and has written extensively on contemporary

Southeast Asian art. She recently edited and produced No Chaos No Party: 28 Artists in Metro Manila, 2016, an interview based publication on artists and life in the city.

Ana Morales

Director of production and programs, PHotoEspaña, Spain

Sujong Song

Co- founder of Seoul Lunar Photo

Sujong Song is a Seoul-based curator who is active in all aspects of photography, from publication to exhibition and events planning. Until 2014, she had been on the steering committee for the Daegu Photo Biennale, and was a director of its portfolio review section.

She organized Five Views from Korea at the Noorderlicht Gallery in 2014, Two Moons at the GoEun Museum of Photography in 2015 and the Map of Daily Life at the Art Museum of Lishui in 2015,

She was on the judging panels for World Press Photo and POYi among various photography awards and is also nominators for several award and program including Prix Pictet and Joop Swart masterclass. Sujong currently writes a column on photography for the daily Kyunghyang Shinmun and was formerly the editor-in-chief of GEO-Korea.

Zhuang Wubin

Writer, curator and artist, Singapore

As a writer/curator, Zhuang focuses on the photographic practices in Southeast Asia. A 2010 recipient of the research grant from Prince Claus Fund (Amsterdam), Zhuang is an editorial board member of Trans-Asia Photography Review, a journal published by the Hampshire College and the University of Michigan Scholarly Publication Office. He has been invited to research residency programmes at Institute Technology of Bandung (2013) and Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong (2015). He is the contributing curator of the biennial Chiang Mai Photo Festival (2015, 2017).

As an artist, Zhuang uses photography and text to visualise the Sinophone communities in Southeast Asia

How to make a body of work

One day workshop

Sujong Song and Ana Morales have long experience seeing portfolios and organizing professional meetings with photographers on different festivals and contexts. They have seen and received big number of portfolios and they are in constant contact with photographers.

One of the most important things nowadays is how to present your work and yourself as an artist. Experts wants to see strong projects, personal style, artistic and unique approaches, coherence on the speech and open minds to receive opinions, suggestions and feed backs.

This workshop will present guidelines and references to improve the presentation of your work, career and yourself as an artist and as a person.
